My Silver Coast Weekend

Another bright and sunny day on the Silver Coast and my thoughts are turning to the weekend. There is always so much to fit in to those two precious days, especially when there are just so many fun things to choose from.

I am planning to start the weekend in style this evening by enjoying a ‘sundowner’ after work on the sea front in Sao Martinho do Porto with a friend, very civilized!

Then over dinner with my husband at our favourite Silver Coast restaurant – Solar dos Amigos near Caldas da Rainha – we will plan the weekend.

Obviously having a five year old to consider we will have to make certain compromises but a visit to the park in Caldas is always fun, and with the lovely fruit and vegetable market close by it means we can get a bit of shopping done too.

Once the usual weekend chores are out of the way we might make a trip to the beach. Our nearest and favourite is the bay at Sao Martinho do Porto, it is a fabulous soft sandy beach where our little boy can build sand castles and run and play in complete safety. The water in the bay is always calm and perfect for children to splash about in, and the huge sand dune at the southern end of the bay in Salir do Porto is great fun for everyone.

Sunday lunch will probably be at O Cortiço the big and busy restaurant in Tornada on the Caldas da Rainha road. They have a terrific menu and are very child friendly, we have been to O Cortiço so many times that we are now known and welcomed as friends.

Back home later in the afternoon there will probably be time for a leisurely country walk with the dog so that we can walk off our lunch and enjoy more of the beautiful Silver Coast sunshine.

The Silver Coast has Exploded With Colour. . .

The Silver Coast, as is usual at this time of year, is beginning to look like a florist’s shop. The explosion of wild flowers seems to appear almost overnight and never ceases to amaze me.

The vivid colours of scarlet poppies and yellow lupins are always more striking against the back drop of piercing blue sky and green grass in the bright sunshine of a Silver Coast spring day. I am always most impressed by the huge white lilies that seem to grow everywhere and love nothing more than helping myself to an enormous bunch of them to display lavishly in the sitting room, smugly remembering that this sort of thing used to cost at least £60 in London!

Gardening on the Silver Coast can be a very rewarding pastime, as the climate and landscape lend themselves perfectly to growing all kinds of plants with ease.

There are a number of excellent Garden Centres in the area, one of the best known is FlorObidos between Caldas da Rainha and Obidos. This is a garden centre in the English style covering about 2 ½ acres with a café and play areas inside and out for the kids. They stock a huge variety of trees and plants along with pots, tools and garden furniture. You can even buy a one hundred year old olive tree that they will deliver and plant for you!

Caldas da Rainha Has One of the Best Fish Markets on the Silver Coast

Caldas da Rainha on the Silver Coast of Portugal is a charming traditional Portuguese town famous for its thermal hot springs and daily fruit and vegetable market.

Less well known but equally popular with the locals is the fish market, held in a large hall near the centre of town

The vibrant market comprises dozens of stalls with most of them run by enthusiastic ladies doing their best to shout the loudest and sell the most fish. The amazing array of beautifully fresh produce is caught by the fishermen of the nearby towns of Nazare and Peniche and is extremely good value.

Since moving to the Silver Coast I have had more time to experiment in the kitchen and one of my great successes has been a Portuguese style fish stew made with a selection of mixed fish available from many of these stalls at just €5 per kilo. What a bargain!

Something else to look out for are the sardines, usually priced at around €2 per kilo and always impeccably fresh, they are just so delicious sprinkled with sea salt and simply barbecued. Served in the Portuguese manner with boiled potatoes and salad, fresh sardines make an unbeatable lunch or supper.

The fish market used to be held in the open air in a square nearer Caldas da Rainha park. Since the move the square has now been transformed into a relaxing area with lots of outside seating provided by the many bars and restaurants that have now sprung up. Below ground there is a large car park which is a God send on busy days in town.

Caldas da Rainha is an interesting place to visit when visiting the Silver Coast, offering an insight into Portuguese life away from the tourist trail.

Obidos, a Silver Coast Gem

The pretty medieval town of Obidos is yet another delightful gem on the Silver Coast.

The huge protective walls that surround Obidos are crammed with tiny white washed houses that line the maize of narrow cobbled streets. The town is over looked by the magnificent Moorish castle, set on a fantastic elevated site with 360 degree views over the surrounding countryside.

Hundreds of years ago the Obidos Lagoon came right up to the town but in recent times the water has receded somewhat and now the fertile land is productively farmed instead.

It is possible to take a walk along the footpath that surrounds Obidos providing not only fantastic views but diversions such as a children’s play park and a herd of beautiful spotty deer wandering in a leisurely manner in their shady enclosure.

Obidos is situated about 10 minutes from Caldas da Rainha on the fabulous Silver Coast of Portugal.

Silver Service on the Silver Coast

The Silver Coast is blessed with numerous restaurants, from international fine dining to tiny rustic traditional Portuguese places tucked away off the beaten track and one of my absolute favourites is Restaurante O Cortiço on the main road that links Caldas da Rainha to Alcobaça.

This large friendly restaurant has been in business for decades and is always busy and bustling with a great atmosphere.

I visited O Cortiço on my very first trip to the Silver Coast way back in 1988 (obviously I was very young!) and still see the same team of friendly efficient waiters working there today.

They specialise in Wild Boar but also have an extensive menu featuring Portuguese dishes and comfort food at its best. The generous portions are often big enough to share between two and everything is freshly and expertly cooked.

The name O Cortiço means the Honeycombe which is a good description of the labyrinth of rooms that are gradually opened up as the place fills up with hungry customers, meaning that this huge restaurant never feels empty even when you are one of the first to arrive.

The restaurant is open all day, seven days a week which is quite unusual for Portugal so whenever you are feeling in need of a bite to eat, you now know where to come.

Restaurante O Cortiço is just a short drive from Sao Martinho do Porto and Salir do Porto.

Pao de Ló

The village of Alfeizerao is just along the road from Sao Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast.

It has a busy high street with a good range of useful shops including a butchers shop where they speak excellent English and have their own herd of grass fed cows (rather unusual in Portugal), a post office with a chain smoking post mistress who is probably happier than she looks, a jewelers, two banks and a selection of little clothes and haberdashery shops.

However, the most notable thing about Alfeizerao is a cake.

Enjoyed the length and breadth of Portugal, and indeed throughout the world in Portuguese communities, Pao de Ló is a sweet eggy sponge with a deliberately under cooked gooey centre.
The recipe dates back hundreds of years and it is said that true Pao de Ló only comes from Alfeizerao. The tiny factory I pass on my way to work every morning produces huge quantities of these delicious cakes which they sell in their own coffee shop and deliver far and wide.

If you fancy trying a slice of authentic Pao de Ló then you will find Alfeizerao just off the A8 motorway at junction 21 it is also within very easy reach of other interesting places such as Salir do Porto and Caldas da Rainha.

Fancy a Coffee?

Reminiscent of most of Western Europe, Portugal has a strong cafe culture. Spending an afternoon people watching whilst enjoying a coffee at a café in a pretty square in Caldas da Rainha is as enjoyable as sitting on the seafront in Sao Martinho do Porto doing the same thing.

The Portuguese are rightly proud of their coffee and have so many variations that this guide may be of help to you when you next come over to visit us here on The Silver Coast.

Café – Ask for a simple café and you will be presented with an espresso, the coffee of choice for most Portuguese.

Bica – This is just another name for the above but has an interesting little story, allegedly it stands for ‘Beba Isto Com Açucar’ – ‘meaning drink this with sugar’. Apparently when coffee was first introduced to Portugal the locals found it rather unpalatable until an enterprising cafe owner displayed a sign suggesting Beba Isto Com Açucar and the rest is history!

Cafe Cheio – Meaning ‘full coffee’ this is an espresso topped up with hot water to make a slightly weaker brew.

Abatanado - This is a large cup of black coffee, usually the equivalent of three espressos.

Meia de Leite – Meaning ‘half of milk’, a larger coffee and favoured by us Brits.

Galão – A large milky coffee served in a tall glass similar to a cafe latte. The strength may vary between cafes so you should ask for a Galão Escuro (dark) if you prefer it a little stronger.

The Portuguese have many more coffee recipes but rather than reading about them come and sample some for yourself.
Whether you prefer to sit at a little table on the busy cobbled streets of Obidos, or watch the ocean at Nazare you will find plenty of cafes to choose from.

My personal favourite is delightful little place overlooking the Obidos Lagoon, it is hidden away and completely off the beaten track, charming simplicity and only 60 cents a cup – but you will have to come and find it for yourself . . .

What a Small World!

I first had thoughts about moving to Portugal when over here on holiday and had dreamed about it ever since. But although I couldn’t think of a nicer place to live I was a little concerned about leaving behind family, friends and all things familiar.

However, that was in the days before the use of the internet became commonplace. This millennium it seems that everyone has internet access making the world feel like a much smaller place.

I eventually realised my dream and came to live on Portugal’s Silver Coast in the summer of 2005 and by making the most of everything the internet has to offer I have never felt cut off from things back in the UK.

I listen to BBC Radio 4 every morning while having breakfast and continue to moan about John Humphrys just as I did before, and I never miss The Archers!

Keeping in touch with my friends and family by email is easy (and free!) and of course now it is very straight forward to use live chat and webcam and actually see the person you are talking to. Then there is Skype if you just want to give someone a call.

I can follow the test match without missing a ball and I can buy just about anything via online shops. Amazon is my current favourite, so now there is no problem buying English language books and DVD’s whenever I want to.

If you enjoy watching television then that is not a problem either. You can watch anything you care to via the internet or satellite, although Portuguese TV does show a lot of English language films with Portuguese subtitles, which is actually a great way to learn the language.

Moving with my family to the Silver Coast proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. We enjoy all the benefits of living in a beautiful part of the world with the beach on our doorstep and places like Sao Martinho do Porto and Salir do Porto just up the road, without having to miss a thing from the UK.

We often jump in the car and take a short drive up to Nazare for Sunday lunch in a restaurant on the seafront, or maybe go to Obidos for a look around the lovely little shops to do a spot of Christmas shopping.

Then there is Caldas da Rainha also very close by and Lisbon less than an hour away. We really couldn’t be better placed to get the best of all worlds.

They say you only live once – I say make sure you live the life you wish for.

Discovering Caldas da Rainha

Here on the beautiful Silver Coast of Portugal we are blessed with many picturesque towns and villages full of history, stunning coastal views, quaint restaurants and bars and a wonderful holiday atmosphere.

But what if you live here? Or what if you visit the area regularly, staying in your own holiday apartment or villa? You might want to experience a bit more than just sandy beaches and ice cream.

That is where places like Caldas da Rainha come in to their own, located about 20 minutes inland from Foz do Arehlo and with Obidos just ten minutes away Caldas is right in the centre of the fabulous Silver Coast region.

This bustling little city of around 25,000 inhabitants was established in the 15th century by Queen Leonor who founded a hospital at the site of the therapeutic hot springs. The hospital is still in operation today making it one of the oldest institutions of this type in the world.
Although modernised and extended, tours of the original parts of the hospital can be booked through the museum behind the main building and it is a fascinating place to visit. The original pool is still there with its domed ceiling carved from stone, the misty atmosphere created by the warm water pervaded by the strong aroma of sulfur.

Back outside in the fresh air and sunshine you will find yourself in a little square along one side of which can be found an entrance to the impressive park. This is a beautiful formal garden reminiscent of the Victorian parks found in the UK. Along with the huge range of exotic plants, trees and grassy areas there is a boating lake, a bandstand, tennis courts, a children’s playground and a lovely café/restaurant with lots of outside seating. It is a delightful place to while away an afternoon.

I should also mention the fantastic farmers market held daily in the Praça da Fruta the big market square in the centre of town. Caldas da Rainha is the only place in Portugal hold a daily market and it is a great place to pick up some fresh produce. Lots of colour, lots of noise, lots of fun.

There is also plenty more retail excitement to be had in the wide variety of shops and stores found in and around the city, including several supermarkets and shopping centres, and with a choice of cinemas, theatres and a new bowling complex, there is plenty of other entertainment too.

A short drive north of Caldas brings you to the coastal towns of Salir do Porto, Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare, all great unspoilt holiday destinations with long sandy beaches.

Lights up in Nazare

The beach front of Nazare on the Silver Coast is absolutely stunning at the moment, the lights are up and switched on and it is that time of year when the promenade comes alive with Christmas spirit.

Nazare is the place to be over the Christmas season, the popular fishing village attracts visitors from all over Portugal, not only in the summer but over the festive season too. Not only that, but Nazare is the most popular place to come for new years eve, people come from all over the Silver Coast; Sao Martinho do Porto, Obidos, Foz do Arelho and Caldas da Rainha to enjoy the massive beach party in Nazare.

Sporting vs Benfica . . . this is huge!

Two of the biggest names in Portuguese football meet this weekend in a game that divides families, towns, companies and bars for a weekend. FC Porto may have been the most successful Portuguese football team in recent years but the oldest and most well known clubs are Lisbon giants Benfica and Sporting.

The stadiums are only 200 meters away from each other and this weekend the two teams will meet in the most anticipated club game on the Portuguese calendar. Benfica are the team to beat at the moment, they have splashed out this season on some big name signings and currently sit in joint first place. Sporting has not had a good season, they lie in seventh and their coach Paulo Bento resigned last week. However Sporting have been encouraged by their recent 4-1 cup victory and some indifferent results for Benfica, including a shock cup exit at the hands of Victoria Guimaraes.

So the stage is set, our company, based here on the Silver Coast is divided and this game will be spoken about for weeks to come with fans of the winning team given bragging rights for the next 6 months in restaurants, pubs, schools, on building sites and in the office.

On Saturday the 28th of November at 21:15 the country will stand still as these two teams go head to head, the Silver Coast will be no different as fans from both teams will gather in pubs and restaurants in Nazare, Obidos, Caldas da Rainha, São Martinho do Porto and Foz do Arelho to cheer their favorite team on to victory.

I will be taking the short 45 minute drive to the Alvalade stadium in my green and white hooped shirt and scarf, hoping for a Sporting win.

Christmas Magic in Obidos Castle

‘Vila Natal’ the traditional Christmas celebrations that last for more than a month commence on November 28th. Obidos Castle on the Silver Coast has always been a magical place but from the 28th until the New Year something special happens inside the ancient castle walls.

The lights go up, the smell of delightful treats fill the air, Christmas songs can be heard on the cobble stone streets, live music, concerts and plays entertain children and adults alike and don’t forget the ice rink.

There is something for everyone with events planned every night for more than a month. Christmas inside the walls of Obidos castle is an experience like none other and families always make the short drive from surrounding areas like São Martinho do Porto, Caldas Da Rainha, Nazare, Lourinha, Foz do Arelho and even Lisbon to savor the Obidos Christmas magic.

Indonesian cuisine and massage centre on the Silver Coast

The Festive season approaches on the Silver Coast.

Christmas is a wonderful time on the Silver Coast. The streets are beautifully decorated with lights, special Christmas pastries and treats are available at almost every local coffee shop and each Silver Coast town gets into the Christmas spirit in its own special way.

In São Martinho do Porto fireworks light up the bay and live music fills the air as festivals and parties take place all month. In Nazare the beach front comes alive with shops and food stands and New Year’s Eve in Nazare is an amazing event as thousands take to the beach. In Caldas da Rainha the shops and street market stay open all night and the smell of ‘castanhas’ (roasted chest nuts) fills the air. Obidos Castle is magnificent at night over the Christmas season and it is magic inside the walls as families walk the cobble stone streets eating, drinking and being merry.

New Hilton Hotel on the Silver Coast

The magic of Obidos is catching on. The next Hilton Hotel is to be built in Obidos, minutes away from the world heritage site Obidos Castle and under an hour away from Lisbon. The world famous hotel chain has recognized how special the Silver Coast really is and has ear marked it as a developing area and a good area to invest in.

People staying in the Hotel will have access to all the hot spots on the Silver Coast, the night life of Caldas da Rainha, the golden beaches of São Martinho do Porto, the gorgeous fresh fish restaurants of Nazare and the world class golf courses in Obidos.

The Hilton Bom Successo Obidos is scheduled to open in 2012.

Rugby on the Silver Coast

Being from South Africa, rugby is a big part of our culture, the Springboks won a ‘little’ trophy in 2007 and also won a ‘little’ series against the British and Irish Lions, we then won the tri-nations and my local team back in SA the Bulls are the super 14 and currie cup champs, okay that’s enough bragging, there is a point to all of this.

I have recently been delighted to find out that there is a rugby club on the Silver Coast and they seem to be doing alright as well. Rugby in Portugal is on the rise; they qualified for the Rugby World Cup in 2007 and will probably do so again for the next one in New Zealand.

Now Caldas da Rainha has its very own rugby club and they recently notched up their second consecutive win of the season making it 2 wins from 2 games when they beat Tomar 20 – 7.

I live in São Martinho do Porto and an Irish friend of mine lives in Nazare, we will definitely be heading to Caldas da Rainha rugby club soon to watch our beloved sport played right here on our beloved Silver Coast.

Cascais gets a sweet tooth and follows Obidos example.

Thousands flocked to Cascais to learn more about chocolate, not surprisingly most of those people were women. The beautiful town of Cascais just 20 minutes from Lisbon was the perfect venue for the event put together by the Portugal Cocoa club. Visitors had the opportunity to understand the chocolate making process, learn about the origins of chocolate and most importantly taste different chocolates.

What a lot of people may not have realized is that a much bigger event of this kind has been taking place for years in Obidos on the Silver Coast. The Obidos Chocolate Festival takes place every year and is one of the highlights of the Silver Coast calendar. Held inside the walls of the beautiful castle the event attracts people from São Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Caldas da Rainha and Lisbon.

How to choose the right Estate Agent in Portugal (Part 2)

If you are an overseas buyer then it will be in your best interest to choose an Agent who is based in Portugal and who has plenty of experience in dealing with foreign buyers. Obviously the issues and concerns that you will have prior and throughout the purchase will be completely different than that of a local Portuguese buyer. Don’t forget that you are in a foreign country and remember there is a language barrier especially pertaining to purchase contracts etc. It is very important that the Agent you choose to work with, is based in the area you want to purchase, in the case of the Silver Coast, you want an agent who is central to all the main areas like Obidos, São Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Caldas da Rainha and Foz do Arelho, an agent who can provide you with all the back up and support that you will require to make the purchase of your villa or apartment a smooth and enjoyable one.

There is a misconception that many overseas buyers have to not take recommendations from their Agents with regards to lawyers, mortgage brokers, management companies etc. If you are working with an established and reputable company then you should listen to their advice. Any recommendations for lawyers or mortgage brokers made by your Agent must be independent as stated under Portuguese law. If you have any doubts about the honesty of the Estate Agent then you should not be working with them in the first place.

How to choose the right Estate Agent in Portugal (part 1)

We have all heard the horror stories of un-suspecting purchasers of overseas property being ripped off by agents. The overseas property industry is still largely unregulated although that is not the case for registered and licensed Estate Agents in Portugal. Each registered Estate Agent in Portugal will have an “AMI” license number (Associacão de Mediadores Imobiliarios) which is issued by the governing body for Portuguese Real Estate Agents “INCI” (Instituto da Construcao e do Imobiliária). To obtain this license agents must be trained and certified by INCI and undertake a proficiency exam every 3 years.

The large proportion of Overseas Property Companies who sell foreign property are NOT licensed or regulated in the individual countries that they operate. If you are considering a property purchase in Portugal then it makes more sense for you to use a Portuguese based and licensed Estate Agent. You will then have the peace of mind that the company you put your trust in will be regulated in the country that you purchase in. When looking at property on the Silver Coast you need to be sure that you are dealing with a legitimate company and whether acquiring property in Nazare, São Martinho do Porto, Obidos, Foz do Arelho or Caldas da Rainha you want a company that knows and operates in these areas.

Portugal to play Bosnia-Herzegovina for a place in world cup

Portugal will have to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina over 2 legs if they want to play in next year’s world cup on South African soil. It was announced yesterday that the 2 games will be played on the 14th and 18th of November with the home leg being played at ‘Estadio da Luz’ in Lisbon.

This means that the national team will be training and making their final preparations right here on the Silver Coast. The last time they made use of the training facilities in Obidos they won the following 2 games comfortably. Young and old fans from areas like Foz do Arelho, Caldas da Rainha, São Martinho do Porto and Nazare will be able to watch their heroes prepare for the do or die games against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

A little bit of Obidos magic will be needed once again . . .

Live music and comedy in Caldas da Rainha

The vibrant town of Caldas Da Rainha on the Silver Coast will host the show ‘Ola Ola’, an adaption of the popular TV show ‘Allo Allo’ presented by the ‘Costa de Prata Entertainers’ and written by Richard Hartwell.

The show will be split into two halves with the 1st part dedicated to the Ola Ola production and the 2nd part entitled ‘Songs from the shows’ will showcase popular chorus lines and solos from the most popular productions in the twentieth century.

The music and comedy special will be presented on the 17th of October at the Pimpões arts and sports centre in Caldas da Rainha. Tickets are only €5.

Our 100th blog

This is our 100th blog! And what better way to celebrate then to tell you another wonderful story about this amazing place that I am so happy to call my home.

I was recently on leave and decided to spend some time in Cascais. I had a wonderful time resting, sleeping in and not having to worry about anything work related for a whole week. On Sunday I made my way back to my apartment in São Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast and just my luck my car starts to overheat, the oil was fine and the water was fine but for some reason it kept overheating. I took evasive action turned off at the next off ramp and ended up in a little village called . . . ‘I don’t know what’.

There I was parked outside a little quinta that belonged to an old Portuguese farmer, let’s just say we had some communication problems but we both agreed that the car was not working. As I waited for the tow truck to come the old man and his wife were wonderful, offering me, a complete stranger, food, water and even beer.

I managed to get a tow truck driver to take me to a mechanic in Caldas Da Rainha. Now when you have a 30 minute trip with someone who doesn’t have much to say in Portuguese never mind English the trip feels a lot longer but then the unthinkable happened, the grumpy, non-talkative tow truck driver put in a Rod Stewart cd and all of a sudden there was no more awkward silence as we sang along to the classics together.

It turned out to be a great day and once again I was reminded of what a special place this is.

Why Silver Coast is the place to buy

The Silver Coast, a stretch of spectacular coastline that runs for approx 150 km's north of Lisbon up towards the fishing town of Nazare, is now a popular second home destination for buyers keen on Portugal but disenchanted with the Algarve’s high property prices and in search of a more authentic rural lifestyle.

Since the new A8 motorway opened in 2001, cutting 30 minutes off the journey time to Lisbon’s international airport and opening up the region’s long sandy beaches and spectacular landscapes to outsiders, the Silver Coast has seen a steady flow of foreign buyers, attracted by the lower prices, rural lifestyle, famous local abbeys, battlefields and monasteries and its proximity to the shops and culture of Lisbon.

Future infrastructure improvements include the new high speed train link between Madrid and Lisbon, due to complete in 2012, which will cut the journey time between the two Iberian capitals from eight to three hours, and pass through the town of Rio Maior, only 20 minutes drive from Caldas da Rainha.

Cultural hub on the Silver Coast, Portugal

It’s a warm Friday night in mid July, and the strains of 18th century classical music drift through the streets of Caldas da Rainha, as this bustling market town on Portugal’s Silver Coast celebrates its annual Festa da Musica or Music Festival.

Founded in 1485 by Portugal’s Queen Leonor around the medieval hot springs on the site, and lying within the Estremadura region only 50 minutes drive from Lisbon, Caldas da Rainha (or the “Queen’s Springs”) is one of Portugal’s most historic spa towns, now rapidly building a fresh reputation as the region’s leading cultural centre.

“From 1485 until the late 19th century, Caldas was one of Portugal’s most famous spa towns, and a favourite destination of the Portuguese Royal Family,” says Dr. Fernando da Costa, head of the Town Hall and responsible for driving the town’s rapidly rising profile.

“Now we want to start recreating those glory days. Famous Portuguese painters and authors like Jose Malhoa, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Gil Vicente have all lived and worked here in Caldas and we have just opened a new cultural centre to host our regular programme of operas, jazz concerts and recitals. Portugal’s best known art and design college is here in Caldas, and we are also just about to invest Euros 10m in renovating the historic town centre.“

New Library on the Silver Coast

Book worms will flock to Cadaval on the 19th of September at 3:30pm as the new state of the art library is unveiled for the first time. The National Network of Public Libraries is responsible for the initiative as it seeks to expand its amount of ‘local information centres’ throughout the country.

Cadaval, located 45 minutes from Lisbon and close to Obidos, Nazare, São Martinho do Porto and Caldas da Rainha, has funded the construction of the Library as part of their ongoing development which includes a cultural centre and new urban commercial developments.

The Library is made up of 2 floors and features a lovely outdoor reading section, sections for children and adults, a multi media section and an archive section.

High speed on the Silver Coast

Another exciting took place on the Silver Coast, this time in the vibrant town of Caldas Da Rainha. Caldas Da Rainha is well known in the region for its night life, apartments, shops and street market. But it was the countryside surrounding Caldas Da Rainha that was transformed into a high speed, high adrenalin race track as the National Rally Championship held its 5th leg last week.
Like everything on the Silver Coast, the rally was a great event, enjoyed by thousands of on lookers who got to see a pulsating finish with just 2 seconds separating 1st and 2nd place.

Caldas Da Rainha has become a regular part of the rally circuit and if this year’s event was anything to go by it will continue to be one of the favorite venues for years to come.

More magic on the Silver Coast

The annual Alfeizerão cycle race took place this week on Monday the 7th of September. I have no idea who won, I have no idea who competed or how many people competed for that matter, what I do know is that it was organized by the local community of this special village on the Silver Coast.

Alfeizerão is not as well known as some of its Silver Coast neighbors like São Martinho do Porto or Foz do Arelho and it is not as big as places like Obidos or Caldas da Rainha, but once again I saw examples of great hospitality and amazing community spirit and this is something worth writing about.

Roads were closed off in the middle of the day, with residence having to park outside the race circuit and walk to their homes, backyards were used to provide stands for spectators and people took the time to stand outside offices and shops to cheer on the cyclists. If that wasn’t enough, owners of villas and apartments and even churches made their electricity boxes available for decorative lighting used on the streets in the evening as the celebrations continued into the night.

Obidos makes the Silver Coast greener

The program 'Social Carbon', run by the Municipality of Obidos, is being internationally recognized. The European magazine L'Européen, in its latest edition, published an article about this program. Five cities across Europe that are dealing with environmental issues were chosen, Obidos is one of them.

In the article of L'Européen, written by journalist Marie - Line Darcy, who was in town last June. She writes about how the ‘Social Carbon’ program is aiming towards long-term development and an environment friendly town. Money and effort is being dedicated to the sorting of waste. The Municipality aims to make it easier for people to recycle therefore reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions.

It is believed that other Silver Coast towns will soon be doing the same, with São Martinho do Porto, Foz De Arelho, Nazare and Caldas Da Rainha among those places that are becoming a little greener.

7th Annual Food Festival on The Silver Coast

Recently the 7th Annual Food Festival of the Arruda dos Vinhos County was held. This years participating restaurants were Cantinho d'Arruda I; Tasca do Beco Torto; Tasca dos Queijos Frescos; Morgado; Nazareth; O Barril; Porta Um and Valverde.
The dishes up for the contest were, cod fish, duck and a meat dish, with the choice for dessert being optional.

The prize for best fish dish, was given to ‘Valverde’ with the plate ‘Horta Codfish’, the prize for best meat dish was awarded to the restaurant ‘O Barril’ with the dish ‘Duck in massa folhada’, the Best Dessert prize went to the restaurant ‘A Tasca do Beco Torto’ with ‘Spells from Arruda Witch’. The West Region Tourism Award went to the restaurant ‘The Morgado’, the winners of this prize were judged on how the restaurant looked, the service and the overall menu. Prizes were also awarded for Innovation and creativity, best use of raw materials and best traditional menu.

The awards were presented during the interval of a Fado show, which took place on the evening of August 18 on the steps of City Hall in Caldas Da Rainha.

New Intermarche Supermarket in Sao Martinho do Porto

Great news for the residence and holiday makes of São Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast! A new Inter Marche supermarket is about to be unveiled in the popular village. Due to be opened mid September, the new supermarket is perfectly placed, just off the N242, presenting easy access for people from nearby apartments, villas and surrounding villages.

Previously locals from São Matinho do Porto could do their at a number of smaller shops but if they needed to go to a bigger supermarket or one that stayed open later than 9pm then the only options would be to go to Caldas Da Rainha or Nazare. The news of the supermarket has been well received by the community of São Martinho Do Porto, I being one of them, it is just a short 5 minute walk away from my apartment. How convenient :)

Football madness begins again on the Silver Coast

I am unashamedly a Sporting Lisbon supporter, I should mention now that I am usually grossly out numbered at dinner parties or even the local pub, almost everyone I meet here supports Benfica, except the elite few who have their heads screwed on right.

Much to everyones delight, football started this weekend, let the madness begin. Its that time of year again where neigbours become enemies, husbands forget the names of their wives and pubs fill up on the Silver Coast, whether it be in the Irish pub in Nazare, Status bar in Sao Martinho do Porto or Joyces in Caldas Da Rainha. This is the start of the football season and the debate is on in Portugal; Will Porto dominate the league again? Will Benfica stop underachieving after spending so much money in the summer transfer window? Will Sporting be able to qualify for the champions league again?

The other interesting development has been the inclusion of Leiria in Portugals top flight this year. Will they stay up? Will they surprise some of the big teams? Leiria is one of the bigger cities on the Silver Coast and it is the first time in a long time that the region has been represented in the Ligue Sagres.

There is a healthy rivalry among supporters here on the Silver Coast, it is so healthy that if you happen to be on the losing end, the opposition supporters are there to console you and even buy you a beer or two.

Whatever happens, the pubs and restaurants on the Silver Coast will be full, villages divided and the atmosphere electric.

Children playing in the street at midnight on the Silver Coast

Being from South Africa, when driving at midnight the only thing that you see on the road at this time is other people driving as fast as they can to get home. You see driving at that time if night is not very safe, there is a law in South Africa that if you are driving after 11:30pm and you are waiting at a traffice light, if you see something suspicious you are allowed to jump the red light if the way is clear. South Africa and more specifically Johannesburg has one of the highest hijack rates in the world.

Now I live in Portugal, last night I was driving home from seeing a movie, it was 12:05. I was driving through Caldas Da Rainha which happens to be one of the busiest and most commercial towns on the Silver Coast. I drove past a play ground and was surprised to see how many children were playing, these were not teenagers either, they were little, 8-10 years of age. There was no parental supervision and these children were happily playing on the street, their parents in their apartments or houses without a worry, this would appear to be bad parenting but this is a testamnet to the Silver Coast, parents can rest assured that their children are okay here.

This is still something that amazes me everyday, children are safe here, safe enough to play on the street after midnight.

Fairy tales on ice in Nazare

Timeless fairy tales, represented on skates, will return to the stage of Nazare's theatre this summer

From the 30th to 31st of July the show returns to display a skating animated version of "The House of Chocolate", inspired by the famous children's tale by Hansel and Gretel." Produced by the Company Palco Partilhado, dedicated to the creation of spectacles in skates, and with the participation of several skaters of the county of Nazare, "The House of Chocolate" has been seen by more than 30 thousand people, from North to South.

This show starts on the 30th at 3 pm, and on the 31st includes two sessions, at 10am and 3 pm for groups of children in ATL (as in leisure time activities for kids), sporting holidays, etc.., and for families.

On the 12th and 13th of August, the same theatre receives the premiere debut of the show "Snow White in the Enchanted Forest," an adaptation of the immortal story of the Grimm brothers. In a fantastic realm of joy and colour, lived with her father a beautiful princess of black hair and skin as white as snow… All were happy until the arrival of a mysterious woman who captured the love of the King. His envy and evil leaded to Snow White living unimaginable adventures in the company of some new friends.

"Snow White in the Enchanted Forest" is a creative fusion of the beauty of skating with various artistic fields, where each scene comes alive with the artistry of the skaters.
The show, about 75 minutes in duration, will have three sessions: March 12, at 15h and 21.30h, and 13th at 21.30h. The tickets vary from five Euros (for schools) and 15 Euros (family ticket).

Families will be flocking from nearby places like, Sao Martinho Do Porto, Obidos, Lourinha, Foz De Arelho and Caldas Da Rainha to see the spectacle on ice and most probably to cool off from hot, sunny days on the beach.

Toumast brings sounds of the Sahara Desert to the Silver Coast

The guitarist and leader of Toumast, Moussa Ag Keynes, former member of the Tuareg guerrillas, will be with his band at the Praca da Republica in Caldas da Rainha (Silver Coast) on August 1, 10:30 p.m. This will be the first time that Toumast plays in Portugal and should be the last concert of a tour that has already passed through Belgium, Denmark, France, Spain and Holland, among others.

This band takes influences of Sahara’s tuaregues "trance" and mixtures with "blues" of the desert, all with the help of electric guitars. At 15 years of age, Moussa Ag Keynes left his life as a pastor to join the Front for the Touareg Liberation and music then became part of that struggle. In the early 90s, Moussa Ag Keynes, seriously injured, was transported to France where he went to live and develop the project Toumast. Then he promised to himself: "There was a time when I fought with a gun, now I have to fight with my new weapon: the guitar." The name of the project means identity. "

I chose this name because all you I did in the war had to do with the Tuareg identity," explains the artist. Part of the band is his wife Aminata Goumas (voice, ulula, plays gourd, darabuka, Djembe and electric guitar) as well as producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Levy.

The debut album "Ishumar" was recorded in 2006. The songs contain precious motives to the touaregs: the nostalgia of their nomadic life, love, the bitter taste of exile and the political criticism.

Michael Jackson remembered on the Silver Coast and all over Portugal

The news of Michael Jacksons tragic death was greeted with sadness all over Portugal, his music and his dance moves were very popular among Portuguese people of all ages. In every bar and club here on the Silver Coast, Michael Jackson songs were very popular and enjoyed by all. Portugal is a very traditional country with values that are passed down from generation to generation and one of these values are paying your respect to those that have passed away. There is a deep underlying value that when someone dies no matter what has happened in their lives, they are to be honored and respected. Another value that the Portuguese hold to when it comes to death, is after mourning comes a celebration of that person’s life. Michael Jackson will be celebrated this weekend. Live bands and DJ’s alike, playing in places like Sao Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Foz do Arelho, Caldas da Rainha and all over Portugal will be paying tribute to the man who brought joy to so many people with his music.

CD shops all over the Silver Coast and the rest of Portugal were flooded on Friday with people looking to buy one last piece of this pop icon. This weekend in bars, beach front café’s , restaurants he will be spoken about, remembered and celebrated.

Rest in peace Michael.

More beaches awarded ‘Golden Quality’ on the Silver Coast

The National Association for Nature Conservation (Quercus) has announced that there are more beaches this year on the Silver Coast that will be awarded with what they call ‘Golden Quality’. The Golden Quality initiative ,similar to the blue flag program, is conducted in conjunction with the Institute of water and focuses purely on how clean the water is on Portuguese Beaches. Alcobaca, Caldas da Rainha, Lourinha, Peniche and Torres Vedras, all Silver Coast counties, have been included on the much desired list of beaches with Gold Quality, adding to the two dozen Gold Quality beaches that already exist in the region.

In Caldas da Rainha the only beach the environmental organization distinguished was the Ocean front of Foz do Arelho, a number that increases to about five beaches in the municipality of Alcobaca – Agua de Madeiros, Legua, Pedra do Ouro and Polvoeira. In Peniche, North Baleal, Consolacao, Cova dde Alfarroba and Gamboa are also part of this list, which also recognizes the quality of the beaches of Paimogo, Peralta and Porto Dinheiro, in the county of Lourinha.

The West region should also be mentioned the beaches of the municipality of Torres Vedras – Praia Azul, Formosa, Mirante (Santa Cruz), Navio, Pisao (Santa Cruz), North Santa Rita and South Santa Rita According to the association, the good results will allow greater reliability with regard to water quality. Compared to last year’s season, 27 more beaches have been awarded Gold quality, 15 of those belonging to the Silver Coast region.

The Silver Coast just gets better and better.

Lowest taxes in the country

The Mayor of Caldas da Rainha, Fernando Costa, has accepted his nomination as the PSD (centre right) candidate for the local mayoral election and most likely another term in office. Fernando Costa has over 24 years of experience in the position as mayor, one of the longest uninterrupted terms to be served by a mayor on the Silver Coast - Portugal.

This announcement should come as good news to many of his supporters on the Silver Coast. During an interview with the Caldas Gazette he reaffirmed his commitment to low taxes “Caldas will continue to have the lowest taxes in the country and I am committed to reducing them even further.” Silver Coast Property owners will be relieved to hear this, especially those who own properties in the Caldas da Rainha municipal district, which includes the Jardins de Salir development in Salir do Porto, located on the hillside overlooking the bay of São Martinho do Porto and Foz do Arelho or Nadadouro on the shores of the Obidos lagoon.

Should he be re-elected the mayor has affirmed that he will continue with his campaign to:·

Hospital Oeste Norte

- Canvass the central government to locate the new Silver Coast hospital in the Caldas municipal district.·

Thermal Springs

- Restore the Caldas da Rainha, reputation as the leading centre for thermal treatment with the revitalization of the world’s oldest public hospital for thermal treatment.·

Art and Culture

– The mayor plans to increase the budget for Museums and promote cultural tourism to attract more visitors to the region.

The likely re-election of the mayor will mean that the council will continue with its programme to improve its coast line. The pedestrian and cycle track around the Obidos lagoon has been completed in time for the summer and the swimming pool and parking facilities at Salir do Porto should be complete in time for the summer holidays.

Nazare honours The Silver Coasts bravest fishermen

The beautiful fishing village of Nazare on the Silver Coast in Portugal is honouring their brave and tough fishermen that used to travel through the worst weather to catch the codfish that is to this day loved by so many locals on the Silver Coast. A photo exhibition called 'Caixa da Memória' as in 'Memory Box' will be held as a tribute to these men on the 21st of June. Hundreds of faces of men and other remarkable photo memorabilia will be on exhibition at this auspicious occasion. Visitors from places like Sao Martinho Do Porto, Foz De Arelho, Caldas da Rainha and elsewhere on the Silver Coast will be viewing this historical collection of photos and paying tribute to these wonderful men who for years supplied many a beach front restaurant with fresh, delicious fish.

Another event currently on the go at the Cultural Center of Nazare is Faina Maior, as in “Great fishery”, a project promoted by the Maritime Museum of Ilhavo, where twenty thousand restored and digitally remastered photographs and record sheets of crews and there Cod fishing vessels, known as Bacalhoeiros, will be on display. All visitors will be able to view around 1200 photographs of fishermen and officers of the cod fishery that made “great fishing” their way of life between 1935 and 1974.

Art alive on the Silver Coast

Friday the 5th of June saw the commemoration of Artz III in Caldas da Rainha 10 minutes from Sao Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast, Portugal. The 3rd edition of this popular event has once again been organised by ‘The English Center of Caldas Da Rainha.

Eight artists from different nationalities, backgrounds and art schools will be working together offering visitors a unique cultural experience.

Agneta Björkman Ö, Carlos Amaral, Gonçalo Belo, Jeff K. Haagensen, Maria Gonzaga, Marian Simpson, Roger Bowie and Peter Berg are the guests of this event, coming from places as far away as Sweden, Holland, Ireland, Scotland and, of course, Portugal. "Heterogeneous", the name adopted by Artz 2009 for this years event refers to the different style, life experience and creativity that each artist will be bringing to this event.

By the 19th the doors of The English Center of Caldas da Rainha will open to art lovers on the Silver Coast interested in viewing the work of these talented artists. From painting to sculpture, each piece will be an expression of the artists personality and life story. With our sandy beaches, glorious sunshine and delicious food, none of our visitors will be short on inspiration.

This initiative is seen by the management of the Languages School as a new way to communicate with society, offering enriching experiences to students.

The Silver Coast of Portugal, traditional Portugal and contemporary culture, blended perfectly, always interesting…and definitely worth it!
