Foz do Arelho

If you drive around the bay in Sao Martinho do Porto through neighbouring Salir do Porto you end up on the coast road to Foz do Arelho.

This is a lovely drive as it takes you along the top of the cliffs with stunning views of the sea all the way. It is well worth stopping at one of the lookout points, especially at sunset.

After about ten minutes you will arrive at the mouth of the Obidos lagoon and the seaside village of Foz do Arelho. This pretty village of about 1200 inhabitants has been a holiday destination, popular with the Portuguese, for many years and has always had a reputation as being rather exclusive.

The reason for this popularity is clearly the fantastic beach, one of the finest on the Silver Coast. A huge expanse of sand gives plenty of room for everyone, even in the busy summer months, and with a choice of swimming in the calm waters of the lagoon or surfing in the ocean there is something to please everyone.

The beach is lined with restaurants, bars and cafes which along with the colourful kiosks selling ice creams offer plenty by way of refreshment.

In the summer the delightful wooden beach bar is open making a perfect place to sit and enjoy a cold beer while watching the more energetic holiday makers go about their business.

Roll on summer!

Salir do Porto

Salir do Porto sits quietly across the bay from its bigger cousin Sao Martinho do Porto. It is a peaceful little fishing village with a popular family beach in the bay and lots of safe but fun swimming opportunities in the mouth of the river Tornada that joins the sea here.
Salir is also well known for its magnificent sand dunes protected for their flora and fauna, the largest is almost 49 metres high providing endless enjoyment for kids and adults alike.
Just before you arrive at the beach you will notice a brand new state of the art open air swimming pool with a lively café, part of the recent improvement project carried out by the local council.
There is lots of history in the area with the ruins of the old Customs House still clearly visible, lapped by the waves at high tide, and next to this a fresh water spring that is popular with locals who are regularly seen making the trek along the footpath laden with freshly filled bottles.
Salir do Porto is a quiet and peaceful village with a handful of bars and restaurants but a fifteen minute stroll around the bay will bring you to Sao Martinho do Porto where you will find a livelier atmosphere if you prefer.
Another little Silver Coast gem.

Silver Coast Seasons

Here on the Silver Coast of Portugal we are surrounded by nature, the beautiful coastline is made up of golden sandy beaches separated by rugged cliffs. The sea is ever changing, calm in the protected bays such as Sao Martinho do Porto or crashing waves at the wilder beaches such as Salgardo just a few hundred metres along the coast.
This area is diverse offering something to please everyone, a true all year round destination. A beachcombing walk in the winter on Nazare beach is, in my opinion, as much fun as a summer swim in the bay at Salir do Porto, and spending Christmas in Obidos is just about perfect.
The Obidos Lagoon is fantastic for cycling in the cooler months, water sports during the summer and beautiful walks all year round.
The atmosphere changes here in the winter, with the majority of the tourists gone the little bars and restaurants take on a quiet, cosy and very friendly feel, with the owners having the time to get to know their customers, a lovely way to make friends who you can go back and visit over and over again.
Come and visit the Silver Coast, any time of year and discover a whole different world.

Beach Cricket

My thoughts have turned to cricket recently, our office here on the Silver Coast seems to be staffed by a disproportionate number of South Africans and as a big fan of English cricket I find myself in the minority concerning the current test series taking place in South Africa between the home side and us Brits - England are one nil up in the series by the way.
Cricket and Portugal may not be two words often found in the same sentence, but you might be surprised to know that cricket is alive and well and played with great enthusiasm on the Silver Coast.
One of my main concerns when considering our move to Portugal from the UK was that my husband would be able to continue to play cricket on a regular basis, so a quick search of the internet revealed the website of The Portuguese Cricket Federation. The funny thing is that when you mention cricket to most Portuguese people they immediately think of polo, so there is clearly a lot of work to do to promote the game within this country. Cricket has long been played by ex-pats throughout the Algarve but now the Silver Coast can boast its own venue.
The new cricket pitch in Santarem constructed a couple of years ago by a very keen ex-pat cricket fan is host to regular matches throughout the summer and well into October, and is fast becoming a favourite destination for touring sides from England. What a great combination, cricket, sunshine, Portuguese hospitality and the beach just up the road!
If you prefer a more casual game of beach cricket then you are well provided for here on the Silver Coast. With mile upon mile of golden sandy beaches at places such as Foz do Arelho, Salir do Porto, Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare you have plenty of space to knock it for six.
Howzat!

Christmas Cake Fit for a King!

As a born and bred Brit I am very proud of our many Christmas traditions, although the fact that our three main Christmas treats of cake, pudding and mincemeat all seem to be made out of the same ingredients always has me baffled!

Here in Portugal there are plenty of quaint Christmas traditions and eating cake at Christmas is just one of them. Bolo Rei (King Cake) is a delicious light and fluffy bread full of dried and crystallised fruit and nuts and is to be found in every café, restaurant and home throughout the country at this time of year.

Traditionally the cake is baked with a surprise or two inside. It is said that whoever finds the fava bean has to pay for the cake! It might also contain a charm which the lucky finder can keep with no penalty.

The Portuguese celebrate Christmas, along with most of Europe, on the evening of the 24th December, opening presents at midnight after enjoying a family meal usually consisting of Bacalhau (salt cod), boiled potatoes and dark green cabbage.

hmmm. . . Not particularly appealing to British tastes! Turkey is becoming more popular however, and is now widely available, so if you plan to spend your Christmas here on the Silver Coast then you can still enjoy a few British traditions.

Imagine the fun you could have in your luxury holiday home by the sea, what better place to walk off the excesses of Christmas than the beach or may be a round of golf?

Have a look at our properties in seaside towns such as Nazare, Sao Martinho do Porto, Salir do Porto and Foz do Arelho or perhaps magical Obidos, anyone of which would make a fantastic place to spend Christmas.

Christmas on the Silver Coast – What a cracker!

What a Small World!

I first had thoughts about moving to Portugal when over here on holiday and had dreamed about it ever since. But although I couldn’t think of a nicer place to live I was a little concerned about leaving behind family, friends and all things familiar.
However, that was in the days before the use of the internet became commonplace. This millennium it seems that everyone has internet access making the world feel like a much smaller place.
I eventually realised my dream and came to live on Portugal’s Silver Coast in the summer of 2005 and by making the most of everything the internet has to offer I have never felt cut off from things back in the UK.
I listen to BBC Radio 4 every morning while having breakfast and continue to moan about John Humphrys just as I did before, and I never miss The Archers!
Keeping in touch with my friends and family by email is easy (and free!) and of course now it is very straight forward to use live chat and webcam and actually see the person you are talking to. Then there is Skype if you just want to give someone a call.
I can follow the test match without missing a ball and I can buy just about anything via online shops. Amazon is my current favourite, so now there is no problem buying English language books and DVD’s whenever I want to.
If you enjoy watching television then that is not a problem either. You can watch anything you care to via the internet or satellite, although Portuguese TV does show a lot of English language films with Portuguese subtitles, which is actually a great way to learn the language.
Moving with my family to the Silver Coast proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. We enjoy all the benefits of living in a beautiful part of the world with the beach on our doorstep and places like Sao Martinho do Porto and Salir do Porto just up the road, without having to miss a thing from the UK.
We often jump in the car and take a short drive up to Nazare for Sunday lunch in a restaurant on the seafront, or maybe go to Obidos for a look around the lovely little shops to do a spot of Christmas shopping.
Then there is Caldas da Rainha also very close by and Lisbon less than an hour away. We really couldn’t be better placed to get the best of all worlds.

They say you only live once – I say make sure you live the life you wish for.

School Children take over the beach in São Martinho do Porto

The peaceful beach of São Martinho do Porto was transformed on Thursday as hundreds of enthusiastic pre-primary and primary school children took to the sand for a local inter school sports day.

The sports day involved schools from Nazare,Salir do Porto, Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto and other surrounding schools on the Silver Coast. The action was intense and the competition fierce as energetic children were put through their paces in various competitions and races.

It is safe to say that fun was the real winner as children, cheered on by proud parents and teachers enjoyed their time in the sun surrounded by the beauty of São Martinho do Porto bay.

Nazare, sunset capital of Portugal.

It was a case of the right place at the right time, I was on my way into Nazare to grab a bite to eat. Driving along the beach front I was trying to decide where to go eat, there is a lot to choose from in Nazare, there’s the caravans on the beach selling hot dogs, burgers and bifanas, or there is an amazing fish restaurant across the road from the beach called Riamar which does delicious Santola (crab) or if you are in the mood for Chinese there is a fantastic chinese restaurant.

As I was weighing up my options I looked to the left and there it was, one of the most spectacular sunsets I have seen for a long time, there were people walking up and down the peer where I was standing but everyone was quiet almost as if we were all in awe of this breathtaking moment.

The restaurants and snack bars that line the beach front of this Silver Coast town could not be more different but they all have one thing in common they look onto a gorgeous beach and customers sitting enjoying a tasty meal can watch some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Locals celebrate the bay in São Martinho do Porto, Silver Coast

10 years ago the people of São Martinho do Porto were unhappy with the state of the unique shell shaped bay, the water was dirty, the beach was littered with rubbish and debris and as a result the village was suffering. The people knew they had to act, letters to government and marine officials had yielded little response. They joined together and as an act of solidarity and to raise awareness everyone stood around the water’s edge of the bay, from one end to the other and they held hands, it was called ‘abraço à baía’ which directly translated means embracing the bay. It worked, government and marine officials took notice, the water, the beach and surrounding areas were cleaned up.

The breath taking shell shaped bay has remained one of the main attractions on the Silver Coast, it is clean, it is an incredibly safe swimming beach for children, there is a bicycle track that runs around the bay next to a lovely cobbled street. The promenade is lined with shops, restaurants and coffee shops. There is also a wooden walk way that leads to another beach at Salir do Porto.

The beautiful village of São Martinho do Porto is what it is today because of the actions of a group of proud locals. Once a year the people of São Martinho do Porto join hands and stand around the bay as a reminder of what happened 10 years ago, as a reminder of the beauty that surrounds them.

So, on sunday the 23rd of August, men, women and children joined hands and embraced the bay, celebrating its beauty and reminding each other to keep it that way.

The Silver Coast, the perfect family destination

The Silver Coast is the perfect holiday destination for families.

Whether it be families with young children or teenagers there is something for everyone. A family would be able to rent a T3 apartment or a villa on the Silver Coast, only under an hour away from Lisbon and accesible by bus and train. Once in a place like Sao Martinho Do Porto the family can take advantage of the safe swimming beach for the kids, the playground, the cinemas and shopping centres near by and the family pubs in the evening.

This has got to be one of the safest places in the world, to teh extent where parents can leave there kids to wonder up and down the promenade or play on the beach while they enjoy some alone time over a fish meal or a chilled bottle of wine.

Being from South Africa you get used to the fact that a pub is not a safe place to take children so for me it is an amazing experience to see the whole family at the pub together until late. Another amazing experience has been how many parents leave their children to play on the beach, walk up and down the streets, go to the play ground or shops and they are never in any danger. Everyone would enjoy their holiday, teenagers can use the reliable public transport to go to the malls, cinemas, clubs or night life hot spots, children can play on the safe swimming beaches, play grounds and visit the summer circus and parents can enjoy a romantic dinner or lunch with the assurance that their children are safe and sound.

Come and visit soon and bring the whole family.

Leonard Cohen hails Portugal as a peaceful country.

On thursday the 30th of July Leonard Cohen performed another masterpiece performance. Portuguese people and holiday makers of all ages were treated to a wonderful evening of classic music by the folk legend.
It appeared, however, that the music icon was the one who felt most privelaged. Portugal has become a favourite performance destination for many musicians and singers. Not only do they appreciate the glorious weather or beautiful beaches, but many artrists have been touched by the hospitality and enthusiasm of the Portuguese audience.
I made the trip up to Lisbon from Sao Marinho Do Porto for the spectacle and I was not disappointed. The maestro himself clearly overwhelmed by the reception he received was very vocal about his experience of the people and the country.
"In a world full of chaos and pain, it is wonderful to visit a peaceful country" these words sincerely spoken by Leonard Cohen were received with raptous cheers and applause from a grateful audience.
An amazing evening, guided by the peace and love between a man and a wonderful country.

Fairy tales on ice in Nazare

Timeless fairy tales, represented on skates, will return to the stage of Nazare's theatre this summer

From the 30th to 31st of July the show returns to display a skating animated version of "The House of Chocolate", inspired by the famous children's tale by Hansel and Gretel." Produced by the Company Palco Partilhado, dedicated to the creation of spectacles in skates, and with the participation of several skaters of the county of Nazare, "The House of Chocolate" has been seen by more than 30 thousand people, from North to South.

This show starts on the 30th at 3 pm, and on the 31st includes two sessions, at 10am and 3 pm for groups of children in ATL (as in leisure time activities for kids), sporting holidays, etc.., and for families.

On the 12th and 13th of August, the same theatre receives the premiere debut of the show "Snow White in the Enchanted Forest," an adaptation of the immortal story of the Grimm brothers. In a fantastic realm of joy and colour, lived with her father a beautiful princess of black hair and skin as white as snow… All were happy until the arrival of a mysterious woman who captured the love of the King. His envy and evil leaded to Snow White living unimaginable adventures in the company of some new friends.

"Snow White in the Enchanted Forest" is a creative fusion of the beauty of skating with various artistic fields, where each scene comes alive with the artistry of the skaters.
The show, about 75 minutes in duration, will have three sessions: March 12, at 15h and 21.30h, and 13th at 21.30h. The tickets vary from five Euros (for schools) and 15 Euros (family ticket).

Families will be flocking from nearby places like, Sao Martinho Do Porto, Obidos, Lourinha, Foz De Arelho and Caldas Da Rainha to see the spectacle on ice and most probably to cool off from hot, sunny days on the beach.

Being from South Africa you get used to staying in doors after certain hours, you get used to the fact that you can't walk to the shops or to a friends house after 8pm, you get used to the fact that you have to drive everyhwere and you get used to the fact that when you go to sleep you have to lock the gate, lock the door, lock the security gate behind the door, lock the security gate in the passage, put on the alarm and even then, after you've done everything short of planting land mines in your front garden you still have a restless sleep worrying about intruders coming in the night. This is normal for people who live in South Africa.

So imagine my surprise when I moved to a place where I could walk on the beach, walk on the street, walk to the pub at any hour I choose. This is an odd experience for someone like me, but one that I now embrace. The other night I was walking back to my apartment through Sao Martinho Do Porto at around 11:50pm and I was amazed at how many houses and apartments I walked past where the doors were open, wide open! Never mind no security gates or no bars on the windows, but the front doors were open. It just makes me smile, I'm living in a place where people leave there front doors open at night.

This is a truly amazing place, beautiful, safe ........ home.

Why is it called the Silver Coast?

Over the last week I have been asked by 3 different clients where the Silver Coast got it's name.

There are many theories, the beautiful white sand at Foz de Arelho, the white cliffs of
Nazare, the deep blue waters of Sao Martinho do Porto or Lourinha, or the World heritage sites of Fatima and Obidos.

The real reason is one that I love and one that I have been fortunate enough to experience. When enjoying one of the glorious beaches on the Silver Coast, at just the right time, the setting sun reflects off the water and gives off the most amazing glow, it illuminates a breath taking silver light. This is one of the things that makes the Silver Coast so unique, so beautiful and a place that more and more people are falling in love with.

Come and see the glow, this is the Silver Coast.

Diving baptism at the Berlenga island, Silver Coast

It’s as if I were in an aquarium," describes Jose Parreira, 39 years, at the end of his diving baptism, the scene was the crystal blue waters of the island of Berlenga. Antonio Monteiro, 49 years, was another 'rookie' that could not have accepted a better challenge to improve his first experience of contact with the fascinating underwater world. "To see the fish all around us and nature under water is something unique and unforgettable," he said, adding "we saw two octopuses and a bream" this just after he descended for ten minutes to five meters deep.

Jose and Antonio were two of about a hundred debutantes who participated in the "Underwater Feeling", organized by the Association of Dive Operators of the west region as well as the city hall of Peniche, and is part of the Festival Sabores do Mar of Peniche. Peniche is located within 40 minutes of Lisbon, and 20 minutes away from places like Nazare, Sao Martinho do Porto and Obidos. This activity presents a wonderful day out for people on holiday, staying in apartments, villas or hotels on the Silver Coast

The proposal was attractive: Traveling in a caravel replica of the Discoveries age to the "island of dreams", as referenced, and its calm and transparent waters, abundant in flora and fauna, as well as wreckage of sunken boats, to experience the diving baptism.
The desire to plunge into Berlenga’s waters is powered by enthusiasts and descriptions of various articles published in magazines of the specialty, which describe it as an idyllic place and a spot where everyone should dive at least once in their lives

The date was last 13th of June. The starting point for Berlenga is the pier of Peniche. Some divers followed in the semi-rigid high speed toward the island, while others spent more than two hours to get there. The emotions began for the pleasure of travelling in "Vera Cruz", a rough replica of the discoveries caravel, built up of wooden shipbuilding, according to what is known of the techniques used in the century. XV. It’s almost 24 meters long and the main mast reaches 18 meters.

At the end of the day every one would sit around for hours, over good food and plenty of drink exchanging stories and experiences. "It's a totally different landscape from the swimming pool and we always have our eyes open because we take the mask and oxygen bottle. It surpassed my expectations, because under the sea everything is different and we are in another dimension", reported Antonio Monteiro.

"It was fascinating. I was a fan and I did a course in diving, "says Ligia Ribeiro, 43 years."The water was clear and I loved passing through the fish.

Ana Monteiro, 18, also wants to repeat the experience. "We become fish," she exclaimed. "It is a world apart.”

Diving and shipwrecks tourism are just one of the many beautiful activities one can experience at the Silver Coast of Portugal… why wait? This is one piece of paradise you should discover!

The Silver Coasts favorite Irish pub is one year old

Donahues Irish Pub will be celebrating its 1st anniversary on the 27th June 2009; the charming pub located beach front in the beautiful city of Nazare on the Silver Coast in Portugal has become a popular watering hole for locals and visitors from all over the world. The pub is known throughout the Silver Coast for its warm, friendly atmosphere and its variety of imported and local drinks with ‘Guinness’ proving to be very popular with the locals. Donahues is also the place to be on a Saturday night where people from Nazare, Sao Martinho and surrounding areas enjoy a great night out involving live music, dancing, singing, drinks and friends.

The pub is owned by Alan Donahue, Alan’s story of how he ended up in Nazare is a great one. Alan who is Irish himself has lived all over Europe and while living in Amsterdam took a map of Portugal, closed his eyes and put his finger on a spot, when he opened his eyes his finger was over a place called Nazare, him, his wife and son then packed their bags and moved to Nazare, one of Portugal’s most well known fishing villages. He hasn’t looked back since and has established one of Nazare’s favorite venues.

Nazare is one of Portugal’s favorite holiday destinations, for years people from Lisbon and elsewhere have visited Nazare for their holidays in the summer. Donahues can be found right on the strip in this lovely town, people can sit outside enjoying the glorious sunset over the Atlantic or after spending a few hours can pop into the pub for an ice cold beverage. Locals who live in Nazare enjoy the location even more, if they live in an apartment or house in Nazare then they do not need a car to go out.

Happy Birthday Donahues! A great place, in a great city, in an amazing country.
